Nana Kwaku Bonsam, the well-known traditional spiritualist, has publicly urged the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to step up its regulation of certain herbal practitioners in Ghana, whom he labeled “criminals in disguise.” On the June 27 episode of Akoma Mu Nsɛm on Akoma 87.9 FM, hosted by Beatrice Spio-Garbrah, Bonsam voiced grave concerns about the unethical conduct he’s witnessed in the country’s herbal medicine sector.

He appealed directly to the FDA: “Please take a serious look at this issue, because the majority of Ghanaian herbal practitioners are criminals.” He explained that many simply repackage a single concoction under different names, falsely claiming that it treats everything from stroke and diabetes to infertility. “That’s dangerous and deceitful,” he insisted.





Bonsam singled out a particular bitter-tasting herbal remedy currently marketed as a stroke cure, warning that its side effects—especially severe indigestion—pose genuine health risks. He also raised objections to some practitioners who travel to China to purchase diagnostic equipment without any formal training, describing their use of such tools as little more than a theatrical ploy to appear professional. “They don’t know what they’re doing. It’s misleading and harmful,” he said.

Highlighting the broader impact, Bonsam cautioned that without strict oversight, these rogue practitioners are accelerating the prevalence of chronic illnesses across Ghana. He called for a comprehensive, nationwide audit of all herbal operations. “If we don’t hold them accountable, they will continue to cause more harm than healing,” he warned.
