ATLEAST 8 DEAD AFTER HOT AIR BALLOON INCIDENT IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

At least eight people have died following a hot air balloon accident in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil on Saturday, June 21, 2025, according to local governor Jorginho Mello. Mello stated in a video statement on X that "We are all shocked by the accident involving a balloon in Praia Grande, this Saturday morning. Our rescue team is already on site... So far, we have confirmed eight deaths." He also expressed his solidarity with the city and stated that they are investigating the developments, what happened, and why it happened.

According to CNN Brasil, the incident is the third involving a hot-air balloon in Brazil in less than a week. Last Sunday, a balloon carrying 35 people without authorization to fly fell in São Paulo, resulting in one death and the arrest of the pilot. Last Thursday, another balloon fell on the coast of São Paulo, though it caused no serious damage or hit any homes.

Praia Grande is a popular destination for hot-air ballooning, especially during June festivities that celebrate Catholic saints like Saint John, as reported by the Associated Press news agency.

The hot air balloon involved in Saturday's accident had 21 people on board, with 13 surviving. A video posted on social media shows the balloon catching fire in the sky, deflating, and then falling to the ground. An eyewitness told local media outlet Jornal Razão that they saw two people fall from above, and soon after, the basket broke and the balloon fell. The eyewitness also saw two survivors at the crash site: "a woman covered in mud and in a state of shock, and a man with her who was limping," along with two bodies.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the victims' families on X, stating, "I would like to place the Federal Government at the disposal of the victims and the state and municipal forces that are working on the rescue and care for the survivors.".
