 Tragedy in Canada: 26-Year-Old Ghanaian Woman Shot Dead in Broad Daylight in Hamilton - Canada.



A young Ghanaian woman, 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie, was fatally shot in broad daylight in downtown Hamilton, Canada, on Friday, July 12, 2025, in what police are calling a targeted shooting gone tragically wrong.

The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. near the busy intersection of King Street East and James Street North. According to the Hamilton Police Service, multiple 911 calls were placed after gunshots rang out in the area. Officers arrived to find a white male suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Further down the street, Sarkodie was found critically injured. Despite urgent life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.


“She was simply going about her day,” said Detective Sergeant John Obrovac during a press briefing. “Belinda was an innocent bystander, spending time with a friend when the shooting occurred.”

Investigators believe the male victim was the intended target, and there is no evidence linking Belinda to the shooter or the altercation.

Originally from Ghana, Sarkodie moved to Canada in 2024 and had been living and working in the Hamilton area. Her only immediate family in the country is her brother, who resides in Manitoba. Relatives in Ghana have been informed of her tragic death.

The suspect remains at large. He is described as a white male with a medium build and brown hair, last seen wearing a black t-shirt with a white design on the front and a large ‘V’ on the back, dark socks, shoes, and a black medical-style mask. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the nearby Jackson Square mall and surrounding areas.

The Ghanaian community in both Canada and Ghana has expressed deep grief and outrage, with many taking to social media to mourn Belinda as a “kind-hearted” and “hard-working” young woman.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward to help bring the suspect to justice.
